A bomb alarm was triggered at the Ursulinen School in Mechelen, a city in the Antwerp province of Belgium. During the lunch break, a phone tip at the school reported a bomb threat.

According to information reported by the national broadcaster RTV, the caller reported a bomb threat via a voice recording repeating the same message. School officials reported the situation to the police without delay.

1700 students were evacuated.

After the tip, a large police force was dispatched to the scene. As part of security measures, Sint-Jacobsstraat was closed to vehicular traffic.

Police teams, assisted by trained search dogs, began a sweep of the school buildings. Approximately 1700 students, ranging from kindergarten to middle school, were evacuated from the school for security reasons.

The evacuated students were taken to the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-over-de-Dijle Church near the school and held there temporarily.

Whether the school will reopen remains uncertain

While police continue searches in the school buildings, it has not yet been confirmed whether the tip constitutes a real threat

Officials will decide whether the school will reopen after security checks are completed. Meanwhile, students are being kept in the church until the police operation ends.
