The crisis in Belgium's government is growing: the prime minister has submitted his resignation

The political crisis that began with the federal government's failure to reach a consensus in budget talks in Belgium continues. After Prime Minister Bart De Wever submitted his resignation, King Philippe postponed the decision for the time being. It was reported that the king would seek a solution to the political crisis by meeting with the leaders of the coalition partners.

King will Meet with Coalition Leaders

In a statement from the Belgian Royal Palace's social media account, it was noted that King Philippe accepted Prime Minister Bart De Wever. Following the failed budget talks, the statement reported that De Wever had submitted his resignation, and that the king had postponed the resignation decision for the time being.

According to the statement, King Philippe will begin consultations with the leaders of the majority parties forming the coalition from tomorrow onward.

'We Cannot Withstand a Long‑Term Political Crisis'

It was recorded that King Philippe pointed out that Belgium cannot endure a long‑term political crisis in the current environment of geopolitical uncertainty and significant economic challenges.

In the statement in which the king called on all parties to act with a sense of responsibility, the words "The king invited all relevant parties to prioritize the general interests and the spirit of compromise. The prime minister will be accepted again by the king on Friday, 6 November." were used.

If the resignation is accepted, a new government process may begin.

If King Philippe accepts De Wever's resignation, a new government formation process could begin in Belgium. During that process, the current government could continue to act as a caretaker, carrying out daily state affairs until the new government takes office.

The king's initiative to consult with political parties to form a new coalition government is also among the options.

If the current coalition partners cannot reach an agreement again and alternative government formulas fail to yield results, the possibility of early elections could arise.

No compromise reached in budget talks.

According to reports in the Belgian local press, the budget talks that began yesterday morning and continued until 1:00 a.m. did not reach an agreement between the parties.

Prime Minister De Wever was reported to have presented a new budget proposal after holding separate meetings with the prime ministerial aides over the weekend, but the government's core team could not reach a consensus on the proposal.

It was recalled that De Wever had previously announced that he would not accept the practice of allocating temporary budget allowances on a monthly basis.

The disagreement in the budget talks increased uncertainty about the future of the government in Belgium.
