Historic Step in Cancer Treatment by a Turkish Scientist!

The cancer drug candidate developed under the leadership of Turkish scientist Prof. Dr. Rana Sanyal has surpassed an important milestone. Targeting the reduction of chemotherapy side effects and delivering the drug directly to the tumor site, RS-0139 has completed its first clinical phase. In a study that began in Turkey and is planned to be moved to international research, the focus has now shifted to 2027.

A novel cancer drug candidate developed in Turkey has passed a stage that has drawn attention in the scientific world. Developed under the leadership of Boğaziçi University faculty member Prof. Dr. Rana Sanyal, the drug candidate RS-0139 has completed Phase 1 clinical trials. In a study aimed at reducing the side effects of chemotherapy and directing treatment directly to the tumor site, preparations are underway to transition to international clinical trials.

RS-0139, one of Turkey's significant efforts in drug development, is being carried out with the goal of creating more effective and less toxic cancer treatments. Scientific research that began at Boğaziçi University has been moved to the clinical stage by RS Research, which operates within the university's technopark.

The drug candidate, the product of Prof. Dr. Rana Sanyal and her team's long‑standing work, is highlighted among pioneering original drug‑development projects that have progressed from discovery in Turkey to clinical research in humans.

Reducing Side Effects in Chemotherapy Is Targeted

The most important feature that sets RS-0139 apart from conventional chemotherapy methods is its reliance on targeted drug‑delivery technology.

Chemotherapy drugs used in cancer treatment can affect not only tumor cells but also healthy tissues. This can cause a range of side effects in patients and complicate the treatment process.

The technology developed by Prof. Dr. Rana Sanyal's team aims to deliver the chemotherapy agent dosetaksel as directly to tumor tissue as possible.

This approach aims to enhance the drug’s impact on cancer cells while reducing its effect on healthy tissue.

However, more extensive clinical trials are needed to determine how much of these advantages can be achieved in patients.

First Clinical Phase Completed

One of the key milestones in developing RS-0139 was the completion of the Phase 1 clinical trial.

A total of 16 patients participated in the study conducted at two hospitals in Ankara and Istanbul. At this stage, the drug’s safety, tolerability, and appropriate dose ranges in the human body were evaluated.

In a statement from RS Research, it was reported that the first clinical results revealed promising findings regarding safety and tolerability.

Although the completion of Phase 1 is considered a significant step in the drug development process, RS-0139 is not yet an approved cancer treatment. The drug's efficacy and safety need to be studied in larger patient populations.

Eyes in 2027

Following the first clinical phase, researchers are preparing for a new era in the development of RS-0139.

RS Research announced that it aims to launch international Phase 2 clinical trials in the first quarter of 2027.

At this stage, the drug candidate's therapeutic efficacy and safety in cancer patients will be examined in larger-scale studies.

Results from phase 2 studies will play a crucial role in determining whether the drug can advance to subsequent clinical stages.

A Significant Step in Turkey's Drug Development Efforts

The project led by Prof. Dr. Rana Sanyal is important not only for its goal of developing a new cancer therapy but also for Turkey's capacity to produce original pharmaceutical technologies.

The transition of a university‑initiated scientific study to the clinical phase through private‑sector collaboration demonstrates that academic research can translate into tangible health applications.

Although drug production has continued in Turkey for many years, developing new drug candidates from discovery to clinical trials requires high costs and lengthy research processes.

The RS‑0139 project also stands out as a notable example of Turkey's biotechnology and pharmaceutical research efforts in this regard.

Could There Be a New Option in Cancer Treatment?

Whether RS-0139 will become a new option in cancer treatment in the future depends on the results of clinical studies to be conducted in the coming years.

Scientists continue to research the potential of targeted drug delivery technologies to enhance chemotherapy's efficacy and reduce its side effects.

RS-0139, developed by Prof. Dr. Rana Sanyal and her team, is among the studies in this field, and the most important stage ahead for the project will be the demonstration of the drug's efficacy in patients through more comprehensive research.

This scientific study, initiated in Turkey and aimed at expansion into international clinical trials, is considered a hopeful step toward the development of safer and more effective methods in cancer treatment.
