Silent September 11 Message in Bryant Park: 'We Have Not Forgotten You'

On the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, a striking and emotional memorial was held in New York for those who lost their lives. Two thousand seven hundred and fifty‑three empty chairs placed on the lawn of Bryant Park in downtown Manhattan symbolized those who died in the World Trade Center attacks.

U.S. Post New York Representative Özlem Özgüt Yörekli described the event and its symbolic meaning by viewing the memorial from Bryant Park on the 25th anniversary of September 11.

2,753 Chairs Facing Ground Zero

All 2,753 empty chairs arranged on the park’s lawn were turned southward, toward the direction of Ground Zero where the Twin Towers once stood.

Each empty chair represented one person who lost their life at the World Trade Center and its surroundings on September 11, 2001.

In the September 11 attacks, a total of 2,977 people lost their lives, including those in New York, the Pentagon, and the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. The 2,753 chairs in Bryant Park were placed in memory of those who died in the World Trade Center attacks in New York.

Yörekli said that the image formed by the empty chairs showed that New York had not forgotten that day, even a quarter century after the attacks.

White Carnations Left on Chairs

Another striking detail of the memorial was the white carnations. The carnations, distributed free to visitors, were left on the empty chairs along with remembrance notes added by those who wished.

Bank of America announced that it would donate $25 for each of the first 3,000 carnations left. Thus the total donation was planned to reach $75,000.

It was stated that the collected donations would be divided equally among three organizations supporting the widows and children of NYPD officers, FDNY firefighters, and Port Authority police, with $25,000 transferred to each.

They Ran Toward the Towers That Morning

During the September 11 attacks, 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, and 37 Port Authority police officers were killed at the World Trade Center.

However, the heavy toll of the attacks did not end on September 11, 2001. Many firefighters, police officers, medical workers, and search‑and‑rescue personnel who were working in the rubble went on to lose their lives in subsequent years from illnesses linked to September 11.

Thus, the carnations left on the chairs symbolized not only those lost in the attacks but also the first responders who ran toward the towers instead of retreating from danger that morning, and the families they left behind.

Every Empty Chair Is an Unfinished Life

U.S. Post New York Representative Özlem Özgüt Yörekli conveyed the atmosphere of the moment in Bryant Park with the following words:

New York has not forgotten what it lost that morning, even though 25 years have passed since the attacks. Each empty chair here represents an unfinished life, and each carnation left on it carries the message 'We remember you.'

Despite the passage of 25 years, the traces of September 11 remain vivid in New York. Thousands of empty chairs filling Bryant Park and the white carnations left on them once again reveal how strongly that day still occupies the city's memory.
