An earthquake struck the evening hours in the western part of China, in the province of Qinghai. In a statement by the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), it was reported that the epicenter was Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.

Officials stated the earthquake's magnitude was 5.3, and that the shaking occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres.

After the quake, initial inspections in the area reported no loss of life or structural damage. It was learned that regional authorities are continuing their assessments to identify any potential damage.

Yushu, Remembered for the 2010 Earthquake

The Yushu region where the quake struck is also known for a major past earthquake disaster. On 14 April 2010, a 6.9‑magnitude quake in the area killed 2,698 people and caused severe damage to many buildings and infrastructure facilities.

Seismic Activity Risk in Qinghai

The province of Qinghai, located in the northeast of the Tibetan Plateau, frequently faces earthquakes due to geological activity caused by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates.

Its position on active fault lines makes seismic risk high. After the most recent earthquake, damage assessment work in the area is reported to be ongoing.
