Allegation of sexual assault at Cornell University

The lawsuit that began in the United States over a claim that a female student at Cornell University was sexually assaulted by multiple individuals in 2024, and the university's disciplinary decisions drew strong backlash. While more than 1,000 people were walking on campus, a solidarity campaign was launched on social media under the hashtag #IamJaneDoe.

The plaintiff appears in the court file under the name “Jane Doe.” The former student claims that after consuming alcohol and ketamine at a Chi Phi fraternity house affiliated with Cornell in October 2024, she was unable to give consent and was sexually assaulted by multiple individuals. The accused students deny the allegations.

Following an investigation conducted by Cornell, disciplinary sanctions were imposed on seven students.

The university announced that some students were expelled, others were suspended, and different restrictions were imposed on the rest. However, the response was negative when the sanctions against two students included not only suspension but also educational programs and evaluation essays instead of expulsion. The university maintains that no student was punished solely for “writing an essay.”

More than 1,000 people marched.

Over 1,000 students, academics, and supporters attended the protest held on October 5. Demonstrators called for an independent review of the university’s handling of sexual assault cases and for stronger disciplinary measures.

With the case resurfacing, the investigation that had not turned into a criminal proceeding in 2024 was reopened. New York Governor Kathy Hochul appointed Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor, and the case is slated to be transferred to a grand jury.

After the incident, while the #IamJaneDoe campaign spread on social media to protect the plaintiff's identity, attempts to reveal that identity drew backlash. Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff, stating that the university should have done better in the face of the incident, supported an independent investigation.
