Success Extending from Diyarbakır to the United States!
An impressive success extending from Diyarbakır to the scientific world in the United States! Melek Duçem Akgül, still a fourth‑year medical student, was accepted to TCT 2026, one of the world’s leading scientific conferences, with a cardiology study she prepared during an internship in the United Kingdom. The young medical student presented her study on patients experiencing cardiac arrest to an international audience of scientists in the United States.

A young medical student from Turkey has made a significant academic achievement in the international scientific community. Diyarbakır-born Melek Duçem Akgül participated in the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapies (TCT) 2026 Congress held in the United States with a scientific study she prepared in her fourth year of medical education.
The research prepared by Acıbadem University School of Medicine student Akgül in the field of cardiology was accepted for an oral presentation at a congress that brings together expert physicians, academics, and scientists from different countries around the world.
The internship in England turned into a scientific study.
The young student's academic journey to the international congress began with a cardiology internship he completed in England.

During his internship at the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, one of England’s leading heart and vascular disease centers, Akgül participated in the scientific studies being conducted. The study prepared during this period, in which Akgül was the first author, was deemed worthy of presentation under the TCT 2026 framework after an international scientific review process.
The acceptance of Akgül’s work, still in the undergraduate level of medical education, on such a significant scientific platform was a noteworthy development in the young researcher’s academic career.
Important Study for Patients Experiencing Cardiac Arrest
Akgül's study focuses on early evaluation of the neurological outcomes that patients who experience cardiac arrest outside the hospital may encounter after treatment.
Cardiac arrests occurring outside the hospital pose serious risks not only for patients' survival but also for preserving brain function. Failure of the heart to supply sufficient oxygen to the brain can cause permanent neurological damage in patients.
Therefore, it is of great importance for medical teams to assess patients' neurological status after cardiac arrest and to plan follow-up processes correctly.
The study, in which Akgül is the first author, also examines whether the scores obtained at patients' admission to the hospital can contribute to planning the early neurological prognosis assessment process.
The research aims to provide a scientific contribution to the clinical evaluation and follow-up processes in this field.
Appeared Before International Scientists in the United States
Recognized as one of the major scientific organizations in the field of interventional cardiology, the TCT Congress is an international meeting that each year tackles new developments in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases

At the congress attended by expert cardiologists, researchers, and academics, new treatment methods, clinical studies, and medical technologies are shared with the scientific world
Diyarbakır-born Melek Duçem Akgül also presented her research to international scientists through an oral presentation at TCT 2026
From Turkey to the International Scientific World
Despite being only in her fourth year of medical school, Akgül seized the opportunity to present her research at an international congress, becoming a striking example of young researchers raised in Turkey participating in scientific work
Transferring a study carried out during the internship in the United Kingdom to an international congress in the United States added a valuable experience to the young student's academic journey.
Melek Duçem Akgül, who hails from Diyarbakır and pursued her education at Acıbadem University, represented both her university and Turkey on an international scientific platform with this work.
