Former American Idol contestant and priest found guilty of murdering his spouse.

In a case heard in Ohio, United States, the jury found former "American Idol" contestant and priest Caleb Flynn guilty in the trial concerning the death of his wife Ashley Flynn. The 40‑year‑old Flynn was convicted of murder, aggravated assault and evidence tampering. The jury also found him guilty on all charges, including aggravated murder.

Flynn’s sentence is expected to be announced on October 5. Prosecutors said that the possibility of a life sentence without parole and no conditional release is a matter of discussion.

The incident occurred on February 16, 2026, in Tipp City, Ohio. According to prosecutors, Flynn shot his 37‑year‑old wife Ashley twice in the back of the head while she slept in bed.

Ashley Flynn was a teacher and served as a volleyball coach at the school. At the time of the incident, the couple’s two daughters were reported to be at home.

The murder weapon was not found during the investigation. Prosecutors, however, argued that evidence at the scene and digital records linked Flynn to the crime.

Allegation that the Home Heist was a Stunt

The prosecutor's office said that Flynn tried to create an image that a burglary had occurred at the house after the murder, and that he called 911 and claimed his wife was shot by an assailant.

Flynn said that on the night of the incident he reported to the police that his wife had been shot and that he believed an assailant was in the house. His defense, however, was that Flynn had slept in another room during the murder and that there was no direct evidence he fired the weapon.

Forced Entry Marks at the Door Discussed

During the case, FBI agents also examined possible forced entry signs in the house. FBI Special Agent Sarah Deamron said she found no signs of a pry, kick, or forced opening on the exterior of the door.

Deamron said she found some marks on the interior of the door frame, but that they did not match the expected traces when forced entry from outside was attempted.

Messages Became a Key Piece of Evidence

One of the most important pieces of evidence presented by the prosecution was the messages between Flynn and Allegha Botner, with whom he had an affair.

The 24‑year‑old Botner told the court that she had been in a relationship with Flynn for about 18 months and that she had used language implying threats against his wife. It was reported that they exchanged tens of thousands of messages.

According to the prosecution, Flynn told Botner that he wanted to separate from his wife before the crime, and in messages he sent the night before the crime he used phrases like "I choose you", "I'm free", and "We'll act tomorrow", which suggest …

Botner also read in court messages in which Flynn appeared to discuss ways to kill his wife before. The defense argued that these messages did not prove the crime had been committed.

"No Direct Evidence" Was Claimed

Flynn's lawyers said investigators could not find any direct evidence that their client fired the weapon.

It was argued that no firearm residue was found on Flynn on the night of the incident, and that his wife's blood was also not detected on him. Flynn's lawyers claimed that Botner's loss of his phone and computer also raised questions for the investigation.

However, the prosecutor's office said that digital data obtained from Flynn's devices showed that he was moving inside the house at the time of the incident. Flynn, however, said he was sleeping during the murder.
