West Nile Virus Alert in Two Parks in Roswell, Georgia
The West Nile virus was detected in mosquitoes in two parks in Roswell, Georgia, USA. Officials are continuing spraying operations.
After the detection of West Nile virus in mosquitoes in Roswell, a city in the U.S. state of Georgia, local authorities sprang into action. It was announced that samples taken from mosquito traps set up at Roswell Area Park and Garrard Landing Park tested positive for the virus.
Pesticide spraying began in the area.
The contractor responsible for mosquito control in Fulton County began pesticide spraying around the traps that contained positive samples. After the application carried out on Tuesday, the same operation was planned for Wednesday night as well. While each application is expected to last about an hour, officials said the method used is safe for people and pets.
New tests will be conducted.
After the pesticide work is completed, the Fulton County Health Board will continue to examine mosquitoes in the area. Officials aim to determine whether West Nile virus is present in other samples with the new tests to be conducted.
Seen in four more regions.
The latest findings in Roswell arrived about a week after the virus was detected in mosquitoes in Fulton County. Earlier, mosquito samples collected at Orme Park, Frankie Allen Park, Welcome All Park, and Adamsville Regional Health Center had also tested positive. The necessary spraying operations were carried out in all four regions.
The virus reached the United States in 1999.
The West Nile virus was first reported in the United States in 1999 in New York and spread to various parts of the country in subsequent years. In 2003, when the virus reached its peak in the country, approximately 10,000 cases were recorded.
Pay Attention to Symptoms
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, West Nile virus can cause symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. In more severe cases, the central nervous system may be affected; this can lead to hospitalization or death.
Mosquito Protection Recommendation
The CDC recommends using insect repellents that have been registered by the Environmental Protection Agency against mosquito bites. The agency also advises wearing loose, long‑sleeved clothing and long pants to make it harder for mosquitoes to reach the skin. It also suggests avoiding outdoor activities during dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus are most active.
