Captain of the Ship Sinking in the Open Waters of Girne Arrested
In the open waters of Girne, the passenger ship carrying 267 people capsized, killing 8 people. While the captain is arrested, the investigation continues.
In the waters off Kyrenia in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the passenger ship Filo Jet, which had set out for Mersin’s Taşucu Port, took on water and sank within a short time. The vessel carried a total of 267 people, including 259 passengers and 8 crew members.
Eight People Lost Their Lives
It was reported that the ship that departed from Kyrenia Port on August 30 began taking on water shortly thereafter. Following the captain’s distress call, coast guard and search‑and‑rescue teams were dispatched to the area. Eight people lost their lives in the incident, while rescue operations continued.
Captain Arrested
After the accident, the captain and seven crew members were taken into custody. In the course of the investigation, a decision was made to arrest the captain. The legal proceedings for the other seven crew members are ongoing.
Cause of the Accident Under Investigation
The cause of why the ship took on water and why it sank rapidly has not yet been definitively established. The Minister of Transport and Communications of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Erhan Arıklı, said on the day of the incident that sea and weather conditions were suitable for the voyage, but that the cause of the accident will be revealed by the investigation.
Passenger Allegations Are Being Examined
Some passengers rescued from the accident claim that during the voyage they reported problems on the vessel and warned that the captain should turn back; these allegations are being considered as part of the investigation.
Three-Day National Holiday
The Council of Ministers of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has declared a three-day national holiday from August 31 to September 2 due to the loss of life in the incident. The investigation will continue to determine the conditions under which the accident occurred and any possible negligence.
