Good News for Those Awaiting the Green Card Lottery
A critical decision emerged from a federal court regarding the DV-2027 Green Card lottery in the United States. While the initial schedule highlighted October 18, a request for a two-week postponement was raised. Özlem Özgüt Yörekli, the New York representative of ABDPost, reported the developments that concern millions of applicants.

Uncertainty surrounding the Green Card lottery, which offers thousands of people the chance to obtain permanent residency each year in the U.S., has been taken to federal court. Following claims that the DV‑2027 program's application process has not begun and that the lottery has been cancelled, a noteworthy ruling emerged from a federal court in California.
ABDPost New York Representative Özlem Özgüt Yörekli conveyed the details of the court ruling that closely concerns the millions awaiting the Green Card lottery, the latest developments on the application timetable, and the new regulations awaiting the candidates.

According to a 14 October 2026 report from the American judicial news outlet Courthouse News Service, U.S. District Judge Jinsook Ohta, serving in San Diego, California, issued a precautionary order for the Department of State to open Green Card lottery applications.
18 October Date Emerges for Green Card Applications
According to information relayed about the court's initial ruling, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio must announce the application timetable to the public no later than 15 October, and the registration system must be opened by 18 October.
The ruling also foresees that applications will be accepted for 30 days. It further states that those selected in the lottery must be notified by 19 November, and visa processing should continue until the end of the 2027 fiscal year or until the relevant quota is filled.
However, the dates in question reflect the schedule outlined in the court's first ruling. An official announcement confirming that the application system has actually opened has not yet been verified.
Green Card Lawsuit Against the Trump Administration
Because the Green Card lottery was not launched on time, California‑based immigration law firm Red Eagle Law filed a lawsuit against U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in August.
The firm argued that the Trump administration effectively halted the Green Card program by not initiating the application process.
The court accepted the plaintiff's request for a precautionary measure and ruled to open the lottery records.

Application Schedule Can Be Postponed by Two Weeks
After the court ruling, another development unfolded. The founder of the plaintiff law firm Red Eagle Law, Curtis Morrison, announced that he and the U.S. government had requested the court to extend the calendar by two weeks to ensure the application system could open smoothly.
This development raised the possibility that the date of 18 October could change.
However, a definitive ruling confirming that the postponement request was accepted by the court has not yet been verified. Consequently, an official statement from the U.S. Department of State regarding the start date of the applications is awaited.
New Era in Green Card Applications: No Longer Free
One of the significant changes affecting those awaiting the DV‑2027 Green Card lottery was the introduction of an application fee.
According to the new regulation by the U.S. Department of State, a $1 fee has been imposed on records of the previously free Green Card lottery.
New conditions for providing valid passport details and photographs of the relevant passport pages are also on the agenda during the application process.
Applicants must fill in their identity details on the application form completely and accurately, comply with photo rules, and refrain from submitting multiple applications during the same lottery period. Applications that violate the rules carry the risk of disqualification.
Warning Against Fake Green Card Sites
Applicants wishing to participate in the Green Card lottery must be cautious of fake websites and intermediary firms demanding high fees.
The official website for applications is listed as dvprogram.state.gov.It is important to verify the application schedule and current requirements published by officials through official sources.
Court ruling does not mean winning a Green Card
The precautionary measure order issued by the federal court is seen as an important development for restarting the Green Card lottery application process.
However, the decision does not mean that the registration system has opened, the lottery has been completed, or that applicants have earned the right to receive a Green Card.
There is also a possibility that the court ruling could be appealed. Being selected in the lottery does not automatically mean that an immigrant visa will be granted.
The latest status on the application timetable is expected to be clarified through official statements from the U.S. Department of State.
