West Nile virus alert in the Netherlands: 3 people lost their lives
The West Nile virus transmitted by mosquitoes has spread to six provinces in the Netherlands. Since August, 3 people have lost their lives while the total number of cases has risen to 18. 80% of the cases, however, show no symptoms.
The Netherlands National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) released updated data on West Nile virus cases in the country.
In RIVM’s weekly report, it was noted that three people had died from the virus since August, and the total number of cases had risen to 18.
One of the identified cases was detected as part of a scientific study, while the others were reported to have sought hospital care after showing symptoms related to the virus and were diagnosed there.
Detected in 6 provinces
According to RIVM data, the virus was detected in six provinces: Utrecht, North Brabant, North Holland, South Holland, Overijssel, and Gelderland.
It was recorded that patients were exposed to West Nile virus through bites from infected mosquitoes.
80% of cases show no symptoms
The most striking factor in the spread of the West Nile virus is that most infections progress unnoticed.
According to RIVM data, about 80% of infected people show no symptoms.
About 19% of cases develop flu‑like symptoms, while about 1% can develop a severe disease affecting the nervous system.
Experts point out that cases without symptoms could make it harder to detect the true spread of the virus in society.
