Historic decision in California: Ramadan and Eid al-Adha declared public holidays

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the AB 2017 bill drafted by State Assembly Member Matt Haney. The regulation has recognized Ramadan and Eid al-Adha as state holidays.
The law not only officially recognizes the holidays but also aims to provide facilitation for Muslims to celebrate their religious days in schools and public institutions. Thus, it seeks to prevent them from facing academic or professional obligations due to religious duties.
CAIR backs the ruling.
After the law was signed, the American Council on Islamic Relations (CAIR), one of the leading umbrella organizations of the Muslim community in the United States, issued a statement.
Kuruluş said it welcomed the regulation, noting that Muslims in California will no longer have to choose between their religious beliefs and responsibilities at school or work.
In the United States, Washington state had been the first state to officially recognize Ramadan and Eid al-Adha in April 2025.
Newsom's Tension with Trump Also in the News

Newsom has long-standing disagreements with the Trump administration over immigration, environmental, and other state policies. In particular, developments during the protests that began after immigration operations in Los Angeles in June 2025 further heightened the tension between the two figures.
The Newsom administration, which opposed the Trump administration's decision to bring California National Guard units under federal control, took the issue to court. A federal court later issued a temporary order restoring control of the units to the state government.

While Newsom's opposition to the Trump administration continues in 2026, the California governor is among the names mentioned within the Democratic Party for the 2028 presidential election
In addition to Newsom, it is noted that Democratic figures such as Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg are also being considered among potential candidates. However, Newsom has not yet launched an official presidential campaign
