Los Angeles Midnight Massive Operation: 700 People Arrested

The large-scale police operation conducted in Los Angeles, United States, targeting illegal street races and vehicle displays ended with hundreds of people being taken into custody simultaneously. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) intervened in an illegal "street takeover" event that involved more than 700 people in the Harbor Gateway area, arresting 69 individuals, issuing fines to hundreds, and seizing 200 vehicles.

Police Tracked Four Separate Gatherings

According to information provided by LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, the operation named "Operation Street Sweeper" began around 2:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Police tracked four separate illegal street gatherings that unfolded overnight through intelligence work and drone surveillance. The operation's focal point was the intersection of South Figueroa Street and West Alondra Boulevard.

While teams observed the crowd grow from a distance, more than 150 officers were assigned to the operation. Officers were instructed to approach the area without using sirens or spotlight lights. Arrest teams waited outside the line of sight as the crowd swelled.

They Turned Over More Than 700 People from All Four Directions

When the number of people gathered at the Figueroa and Alondra intersection exceeded 700, the button for the operation was pressed. Police units moved simultaneously from the north, south, east, and west, closing the escape routes of those in the area.

The LAPD stated that the goal was not to disperse the crowd and allow them to regroup elsewhere, but to bring the participants and spectators under control at the location where they were.

Because of the operation's scale, a tactical alert was issued citywide while additional teams from various districts were called to the scene. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the California Highway Patrol also provided support.

69 Arrests, 570 Penalties

The operation's outcome was striking. According to data released by the LAPD, a total of 69 people were taken into custody. It was stated that 66 of them were charged with participating in or aiding an illegal street race or “street takeover” event.

Additionally, one person was arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer, another for striking, and a third for allegedly obstructing police duties.

Police carried out a total of 570 penalty actions. Of these, 442 were directed at people who watched speed contests or vehicle displays, and 128 were imposed on children and youths alleged to have violated the curfew.

200 Vehicles Seized, Weapons Confiscated

During the operation, 200 vehicles were towed to the parking lot while police seized seven firearms. It was also reported that nitrous oxide cylinders were found in the area.

LAPD Chief McDonnell said the substance could be inhaled to produce a drug effect and was also chosen to provide a short‑term power boost in vehicles.

During the operation, a vehicle catching fire posed an additional danger to the crowd and the responding teams. It was reported that police were unharmed in the incident.

It was announced that investigations of the 200 seized vehicles were ongoing and that it had not yet been determined whether any of the vehicles were stolen.

Children's Age Falls to 11

One of the issues that LAPD especially emphasized was children participating in illegal activities. During the operation, a penalty was imposed on 128 children for violating the curfew, and McDonnell said that in previous such gatherings they had encountered small children as young as 11.

The police chief urged families to know where their children were and emphasized that illegal street gatherings should not be seen as entertainment.

Neighborhood Residents Were the Complainants

The intersection where the operation took place is surrounded by houses and apartments. Residents in the area said that illegal vehicle displays, especially on weekend nights, were repeated; the engine noises, tire burning, and dangerous driving caused serious disturbances in the neighborhood.

Los Angeles City Council member Tim McOsker also said that residents in the area regularly complained about weekend street gatherings.

LAPD: Operations Will Continue

LAPD announced that the “Operation Street Sweeper” is not a one‑time operation. Police said it will continue to monitor those who organize illegal street demonstrations and the calls made via social media.

McDonnell said that organizers who bring people together for a criminal activity via social media could face conspiracy charges under serious crimes.

LAPD leadership also seeks legal reform that would permanently seize vehicles used in illegal street gatherings and, in some cases, allow them to be destroyed.
