Seventeen years have passed since Michael Jackson, one of the greatest stars in pop music history, was sent off on his final journey by his family and close friends. The 'King of Pop', who died on 25 June 2009, was laid to rest in a private ceremony held on 3 September 2009 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in California, about two and a half months after his death.

The Final Farewell Was Kept Out of Sight

While millions of fans around the world mourned Jackson's death, the funeral held on 3 September was conducted away from the public and attended only by invitees.

At the ceremony held in front of the Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, Jackson's family, close friends, and celebrities attended. Elizabeth Taylor, Macaulay Culkin, Chris Tucker, Quincy Jones, and Lisa Marie Presley were among those present.

A 'Crowned' Farewell From His Children to Their Father

One of the most emotional moments of the ceremony was when Michael Jackson's children Prince, Paris, and Prince Michael II placed a jeweled crown on their father's coffin. The crown left for the 'King of Pop' became one of the symbols of the children's final farewell to their father.

Jackson's siblings Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Randy and Marlon became the ones who carried the coffin. Their black suits, red ties and the single‑stone gloves that have become synonymous with Jackson drew attention.

The coffin was moved to Holly Terrace.

After a ceremony attended by about 200 family members and close friends, Jackson's coffin was moved to the Holly Terrace section of the Great Mausoleum by his siblings. Thus, ten weeks after his death on June 25, Michael Jackson's final journey was completed.

The Holly Terrace section where Jackson's grave is located is part of the Great Mausoleum. Because most of the area is not open to the public, fans cannot visit the artist's grave directly.

Remembrance on the Same Day After 17 Years

While the calendars point to September 3, 2026, exactly 17 years have passed since the night Michael Jackson was sent off on his final journey with a private ceremony.

Jackson's silent farewell on 3 September 2009, though he died at 50 and had left behind works that turned into a global phenomenon in the music world, continues to hold a place in fans' memories despite the years that have passed.
