Tinder scandal at NATO base! A romantic relationship turns into a spy alert

The private life of a senior Spanish naval officer serving at the NATO Allied Maritime Command in the United Kingdom has become the focus of a security investigation. The officer’s relationship with Janina White, whom he met on Tinder, has raised suspicions that White may be linked to Russian intelligence.

Following the allegations against 49‑year‑old White, born in the Soviet Union and holding citizenship of the United Kingdom and Poland, NATO and Spanish authorities each launched separate investigations. However, no evidence was presented that White spied on behalf of Russia. White denied all accusations.

The Officer’s Security Clearance Was Suspended

The unnamed Spanish officer was stationed at Northwood Headquarters in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom. The NATO Allied Maritime Command there monitored not only Russian submarines and warships but also the so‑called “shadow fleet” tankers that Russia allegedly uses to circumvent sanctions.

In the first half of 2025, security concerns arose about the officer because of his relationship with White. While Spanish authorities suspended the officer’s national security clearance, Northwood Command revoked his base‑access card after learning of the investigation on 19 June 2025.

The officer’s assignment at NATO ended on 29 July 2025, after which he returned to Spain.

Relationship Quickly Became Serious

White and the Spanish officer's relationship began in October 2024. About two weeks after their meeting, it was reported that the pair began living together in Ruislip, west of London.

The couple later opened a joint bank account, planned holidays, and considered having children. After the officer, a father of two, separated from his spouse, it was reported that he began a relationship with White.

The Christmas Party at the NATO Base Became a Topic

One of the incidents that drew attention in the investigation was White's attendance at the Christmas party held at the NATO base in Northwood in December 2024.

According to court documents, the officer issued a one-day accompanying visitor card for White on 12 December 2024. White attended the event held at the social facility for officers and non-commissioned officers in Northwood.

White also said that a day after his access to Northwood was revoked, he went to the NATO naval base in Oeiras, Portugal, with his former partner. He claimed that he did not enter secure areas, only common areas.

Attempt to Re-Enter the Base

Another incident recorded in court documents occurred on 26 August 2025. A Spanish officer, White, and a third person attempted to re-enter the Northwood base.

It was stated that the officer, whose access card had previously been suspended, claimed to have lost his card and requested a visitor card for the group. However, security guards denied entry to the three individuals.

After White refused to leave the area, the police were called, but no detentions were made in connection with the incident. White claimed he went to the base only to retrieve some personal belongings and to provide legal support to his former partner.

White Denies Casusluk Accusations

White, claiming that he was subjected to discrimination because of his Russian origin, has launched a legal battle against the security assessment concerning him. In the lawsuit he filed against the UK Ministry of Defence, he argues that the doubts about him stem from his Russian birth.

White also recounted another incident he experienced in Russia. Saying he went to St. Petersburg to visit his sick father, White claimed that a person named 'Andrei', who introduced himself as an officer of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), interrogated him for about two hours.

According to the claim, the officer asked White questions about his former partner's role in NATO, the security investigation, and how their relationship began. White said he did not know the details of his former partner's job.

NATO: Personnel Security Is Our Priority

NATO Allied Maritime Command spokesperson Tim Pietrack did not comment on the personnel's individual circumstances due to the ongoing process. Pietrack said that NATO is committed to protecting allied personnel, safeguarding classified information, and preserving trust within the alliance.

The UK Ministry of Defence also refrained from commenting on the matter due to the ongoing legal proceedings. Hertfordshire Police said that teams were called to the Northwood area because of the incident, but no detentions were carried out.
