In the United States, thousands of people traveling daily between New Jersey and New York will have to adapt to a new traffic arrangement due to the renovation work at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan. Starting on October 15, buses coming from Lincoln Tunnel are being redirected onto temporary routes because the existing ramps have been removed. The buses proceed along West 39th Street and use the new connecting ramp near 10th Avenue.

Which Streets and Avenues Are Expected to Experience Heavy Traffic?

Port Authority officials warned passengers that delays could occur, especially during weekday rush hours. In addition to West 39th Street and West 40th Street, traffic congestion is expected to rise around 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue. To facilitate bus movement, a restriction on general vehicle traffic was imposed on the section between 9th and 10th Avenues on West 39th Street. The dedicated bus lane implemented in the morning continues to operate under the existing arrangement.

11-Billion-Dollar Project for the 75-Year-Old Terminal

The Port Authority Bus Terminal, known as one of the world’s busiest bus terminals, is undergoing a comprehensive overhaul to renew its roughly 75‑year‑old structure. The project, managed by the New York and New Jersey Port Authority, is estimated to cost about 11 billion dollars in total. The first phase of the work involves removing the existing ramps, building new connecting roads, and constructing a separate facility where buses can wait.

Phase One in 2030, New Terminal to Be Completed in 2035

The first phase of the two‑phase project is planned to be completed by the end of 2030. During this phase, new ramps will be added along with bus parking and waiting areas. In the second phase, a new terminal building will be constructed on Eighth Avenue. The entire project is targeted for completion in 2035. The terminal will continue to operate during construction, but route changes and traffic restrictions could affect passengers for an extended period.

Passenger Pre‑Trip Check Call

Officials advise those traveling by bus during peak morning and evening periods to allow extra time for their journeys and to verify trip details with the relevant bus companies. Once the project is complete, the goal is to increase capacity, improve the Lincoln Tunnel connections, and modernize passenger amenities. However, in the coming years, travelers between New Jersey and Manhattan will need to monitor temporary routes and traffic regulations.
