Legionnaires alert in New York Bronx: 1 death, 5 cases

Following the appearance of Legionnaires' disease cases in the Bronx area of New York City, health officials sprang into action. While investigating an outbreak in the Melrose and Morrisania neighborhoods of the South Bronx, the New York City Department of Health announced that five confirmed cases had been identified in the area so far and that one person had lost their life.
Cleaning Order for 10 Cooling Towers
New York City health officials examined the cooling towers in the area to determine the disease's possible source. Building owners were instructed to clean and disinfect the 10 cooling towers.
Source Still Uncertain
Officials are taking samples from cooling towers in the area to determine where the Legionella bacteria is spreading from. Cooling towers are among the known sources that can spread Legionella bacteria. However, at this stage no definitive determination has been made about the outbreak's exact source.
Melrose and Morrisania Under Surveillance
The Health Department is continuing its work in the Melrose and Morrisania areas where cases have concentrated. Officials warned health facilities in the region to be cautious toward patients showing symptoms of Legionnaires' disease.
After the Outbreak in Manhattan
The new cluster in the Bronx emerged after another serious Legionnaires' disease outbreak that occurred in New York this summer. In the earlier outbreak on the Upper East Side, 94 people fell ill and 11 died. Officials said the outbreak had ended, but investigations into cooling towers that could be the source of the disease were still ongoing.
Health Warning to Citizens
Legionnaires' disease is known as a serious lung infection that can be transmitted by inhaling droplets containing Legionella bacteria. New York health officials are urging anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath to seek medical care. The disease is generally not expected to spread from person to person.
Investigation Ongoing
The New York City Health Department is continuing its work to determine the source of cases in the Bronx and to identify possible new cases. After cleaning and disinfection procedures, new samples will be taken from the cooling towers to assess whether the bacteria has been brought under control.
