Terrible fire in Brooklyn, New York: 6 dead, 9 injured
Three alarm fires in Brooklyn, New York turned a building to ashes. 6 people died, 9 were injured, 8 were left homeless.

The severe fire that broke out in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, a borough of New York City, turned into a tragedy. On Thursday, November 5, around 1:40 a.m., a fire that started in a two‑story residential building on 58th Street grew rapidly, engulfing the entire structure. When fire crews arrived at the scene, the first and second floors were already ablaze.
The New York Fire Department (FDNY) said the blaze had escalated to a three‑alarm emergency and that more than 230 firefighters and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the area.
Six People Lost Their Lives in the Building
After the fire, searches in the building recovered the lifeless bodies of four people. Two others, taken to hospital as seriously injured, could not be saved despite doctors' efforts. Thus the death toll rose to six. Officials said all those who died were adults.
Nine People Injured, Eight Lost Their Homes
Nine people were injured in the blaze. Among the wounded were three firefighters and two police officers. Injuries of varying severity were reported.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that eight people who were forced to evacuate their homes due to the fire have been accommodated in hotels. It was stated that city crews are providing support to the affected residents.

The Building's Second Floor and Staircase Collapsed
According to information provided by FDNY officials, the flames spread from the basement to the first and second floors. The fire caused the building's second floor and staircase to collapse. The flames also leapt onto another structure adjacent to the site.
Fire crews exerted intense effort to prevent the blaze from spreading to neighboring residences. After the intervention, the building suffered extensive damage.
Electric Scooter and Lithium Battery Details
While an investigation into the cause of the fire was underway, lithium-ion batteries and an electric scooter were found at the scene. FDNY teams launched an inquiry to determine whether the blaze originated from these devices. However, officials emphasized that the fire's cause has not yet been conclusively established.
Fire officials are also investigating whether the building contains multiple independent sections and whether the rooms are being rented out.
Mayor Mamdani Issues Fire Safety Warning
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the tragedy as a great loss and said support would be provided to the families of the victims and residents of Sunset Park.
FDNY First Deputy Commissioner Daniel Flynn urged New Yorkers to plan in advance how to act during a fire. Flynn highlighted the importance of knowing evacuation routes and how to notify other family members in case of a house fire.
New Tragedy Following the Bronx Fire
The fire in Brooklyn occurred a little more than a week after a child and three others lost their lives in the Bronx when an electric scooter battery caught fire.
As fires linked to lithium-ion batteries resurface in New York, the exact cause of the fire in Sunset Park will be determined after the investigations are carried out.
