Election System Changing in New York Long Island: What Do Voters Expect?
In some parts of New York, voters will encounter new election technologies. Touchscreens and double-sided ballots are drawing attention.

In the United States, before the midterm elections on November 3, 2026, changes are being made to voting systems in Long Island. In the Nassau and Suffolk areas, voters will encounter new machines and more comprehensive ballots. Early voting begins on Saturday, October 24.
Touchscreen Voting Will Be Used in Suffolk
In Suffolk County, voters will use touchscreen machines for the first time in general elections. After inserting the card they receive from the poll workers into the machine, voters will mark their choices on the screen. The system will prevent accidentally selecting multiple candidates in a single race and will warn voters if any race is left blank.
When the election is complete, the machine will transfer the selections to a paper ballot. Voters can check the printed ballot before submitting their votes. Features such as larger font size and screen contrast are also offered to make the new system more accessible.
Double‑Sided Ballot Will Be Used in Nassau
In Nassau County, the basic voting method is preserved while new scanners capable of handling longer ballots are being introduced. Because local elections in New York state have shifted from odd‑year to even‑year cycles, the 2026 ballots contain more races. Therefore voters must check both the front and back sides of the ballot.

A speedup in vote counting is expected
Vote counting in election districts in Nassau County is planned. Previously, ballot boxes were escorted by police to the Mineola polling center. Officials expect the new method to help obtain results more quickly.
The cost of the new election technology is $31.7 million
The contract for Suffolk County's new voting system was disclosed at $31.7 million. The new machines allow voters to verify their choices on paper while also providing electronic counting capabilities. Paper ballots can be used for result verification.
What voters should consider before going to the ballot box
Officials recommend that voters carefully inspect their ballot boxes and verify their selections at the final stage on screen. In Nassau County, checking the back of the ballot box is also important. In Suffolk County, voters will be able to submit their votes after confirming their choices on the paper ballot produced by the machine.
