Boris Macias, who lives in the Cypress Hills neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, United States, was prompted to act out of concern for the speed of vehicles on the street and the accidents that had occurred. Living on block 100 of Miller Avenue, Macias placed the speed bumps he had prepared himself on the road instead of waiting for the city to implement the speed‑reducing measure he had requested. The obstacles, installed without approval, remained in traffic for more than a week.

Placed in Three Hours, Drivers Didn't Slow Down

Running his own landscaping business, Macias said he brought the speed bumps from his workplace and that the installation took about three hours. Vehicle accidents on the street and damage to a piece of equipment in a trailer prompted him to act. Concerned about children's safety, Macias noted that vehicles pass quickly through the street every day, saying the area is dangerous.

City Workers Removed the Obstacles

The speed bumps Macias had installed without permission were removed by city employees on the morning of Monday, October 26. Some neighborhood residents, however, want a similar measure that would reduce drivers' speed to be reinstated. Macias said he did not intend to reinstall the obstacles and hoped the initiative would draw attention to the traffic‑safety problem on the street. Officials reported that he was not fined.

Transportation Department Will Examine for a Permanent Solution

The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) said in a statement to CBS New York that it shares residents' sensitivity to safety and will assess whether speed bumps are needed at the site. The agency emphasized that speed bumps must meet certain standards to protect city residents. As a result, it is still unclear whether a permanent installation will be made in the area.

Neighborhood Residents Draw Attention to Traffic Danger

The incident in Cypress Hills has brought the process of meeting traffic safety demands in neighborhoods back to the forefront. While Macias's initiative received support from some residents, the municipality says that solutions approved in accordance with standards and officially sanctioned should be implemented instead of placing unauthorized obstacles on roads.
