Legionella Alarm in New York: Second Death Announced
The Legionella alarm is growing in the Bronx area of New York. While the disease was detected in 13 people, a second death was announced; 10 cooling towers were disinfected.
A second death occurred in the Legionnaires' disease cluster that emerged in the South Bronx area of New York, United States. New York Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin announced that the death was linked to cases in the Melrose and Morrisania neighborhoods.
Case Count Reached 13
According to officials, 13 confirmed Legionnaires' disease cases have been identified in the area to date. The cases are concentrated in the Melrose and Morrisania neighborhoods, which contain ZIP codes 10451 and 10456.
Bacteria Detected in 10 Cooling Towers
The New York Department of Health announced that Legionella bacteria was detected in 10 of the cooling towers examined in the area. It was reported that all of those towers were cleaned and disinfected.
Yankee Stadium Also on the List
Among the sites that tested positive is the cooling tower at Yankee Stadium. However, officials have not stated that any of the current cases are linked to Yankee Stadium. The stadium management also reported that routine tests conducted on August 20 came back negative for Legionella.
Is the Disease Contagious?
Legionnaires' disease arises from inhaling water droplets containing Legionella bacteria. The illness does not spread from person to person. In particular, those over 50, smokers or e‑smokers, and people with chronic lung disease are at higher risk.
Attention to Symptoms
Health officials are urging anyone living, working, or present in the region since the end of August who is experiencing flu‑like symptoms such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath to seek medical care without delay.
Second Cluster in the City
The development in the South Bronx was the second Legionnaires' disease cluster seen in New York this summer. A previous outbreak had occurred in Manhattan's Upper East Side, claiming 11 lives.
