Netanyahu Protest in New York: Many Arrests!
More than 400 demonstrators gathered in front of the UN General Assembly in New York, protesting Netanyahu, and some of them, including famous names, were arrested.
During Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech at the United Nations General Assembly, more than 400 demonstrators gathered near the UN Headquarters to protest his address.
Demonstrators Blocked the Road to Traffic
The protestors carried out an action by blocking roads in areas near the UN Headquarters in Manhattan. While the demonstrators shouted slogans against Netanyahu's speech at the UN General Assembly, police units were dispatched to the area.
The 'Stop Arming Israel' Message
During the action, banners bearing the slogans 'Stop Arming Israel' and 'Fund People Not Bombs' were carried. The demonstrators also called for an end to attacks on Gaza, Iran, and Lebanon.
A Call for Netanyahu in The Hague
The CodePink co‑founder Medea Benjamin, who spoke at the protest, said Netanyahu should face war‑crime charges in The Hague instead of at the UN General Assembly. Benjamin reminded that the International Criminal Court had issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024.
Susan Sarandon Was Arrested
The protest also drew Oscar‑winning actor Susan Sarandon along with various artists and activists. During the demonstration, police handcuffed several people, including Sarandon. It was reported that comedian and actor Hannah Einbinder was among those taken into custody.
Famous Names Joined the Protest
The action reportedly included not only Sarandon and Einbinder but also names such as Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, Elliot Page, Chelsea Manning and Caleb Hearon. New York congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier also joined the protest and was among those taken into custody by police.
Police Intervened with Protesters
NYPD units intervened against demonstrators blocking some roads around the UN Headquarters. A large number of demonstrators, whose hands were shackled from behind, were taken to police vehicles. During the arrest of the protesters, slogans supporting Gaza were shouted.
Netanyahu Speaks in an Empty Hall
Protests in New York took place at the same time as Netanyahu's speech at the UN General Assembly. When Netanyahu took the podium, representatives from many countries left the hall. Delegations from a large number of countries, including Turkey, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Senegal, Pakistan, Sudan, Iran, and Indonesia, also left the General Assembly hall.
Third Protest Against Netanyahu
After many representatives left the hall, Netanyahu continued his speech in the largely empty General Assembly hall. Thus, the Israeli Prime Minister was protested against for the third time during his speeches at the UN General Assembly since 7 October 2023.
Security Measures Increased in New York
Security measures were heightened in New York due to Netanyahu's visit to the UN. While roads around the UN Headquarters were brought under control, protesters were allowed to gather at certain points. Demonstrators, however, continued their actions during Netanyahu's speech.
Protesters' Demands
Protesters demanded the termination of the United States' military support to Israel and the cessation of fighting in Gaza. The demonstrations also opposed attacks on Iran and Lebanon. Activists reacted against allowing Netanyahu to speak from the UN podium.
