Starbucks Is Closing 250 Stores! Where in America?

Starbucks announced it will close about 250 coffee shops in North America due to low performance. In a notice to the regulatory authority, the company said the decision is part of the restructuring process led by CEO Brian Niccol.

Closures Will Be Completed This Fiscal Year

The company plans to complete the bulk of the closures by the end of the 2026 fiscal year. The 250 branches to be closed in North America, where about 18,000 stores are located, account for roughly 1 percent of the region’s total store count.

Cost of $300 Million

Starbucks said the store‑closure decision will cost the company about $300 million in restructuring costs. The company aims to redirect its resources to higher‑performing stores and growth opportunities after the closures.

New Store Target Has Been Lowered

Starbucks also lowered its expectations for global net new store openings for the 2026 fiscal year. While 600 to 650 new stores were previously anticipated, the company now forecasts that the net new store count will be about 440.

Brian Niccol's Restructuring

The company's CEO, Brian Niccol, is implementing a transformation plan called 'Back to Starbucks' to revitalize Starbucks's sales and store experience. The plan focuses on reducing wait times in U.S. stores and simplifying the menu.

New Wave of Closures a Year Later

The new decision came after Starbucks's comprehensive store-closure process in North America that took place about a year ago. At that time, the company reassessed its underperforming stores and implemented a broader restructuring.
