Does it smell like death? The patient it curled around in bed died hours later! Oscar's secret remained unsolved.
A cat named Oscar, living in a nursing home in the United States, drew attention by curling up in the beds of patients whose death was approaching. The unusual event, observed by staff for years, even became the subject of a scientific paper in the medical world.

In the United States, a cat named Oscar living in a nursing home came to attention with the unusual behavior he displayed during the final hours of patients approaching death. The cat, which caught the attention of the nursing home staff, behaved as if he could sense in advance which patient was nearing the end of life.
According to reports from staff working at the nursing home, Oscar would wander through patients' rooms during the day, curl up beside some patients on their beds. However, this behavior was far more striking than a simple display of affection. Whenever Oscar settled on a patient's bed and chose to stay there, that patient usually lost their life within a few hours.
If he did not leave the bed, the patient's relatives were notified.
The staff noticed a striking correlation between Oscar's behavior and the patients' times of death over time. If the cat lay on a patient's bed and did not leave, the staff began notifying the patient's relatives.
Oscar's moving away from the bed after sniffing the patient was interpreted as the person not yet entering their final hours. Although there were five other cats in the nursing home besides Oscar, it was only he who displayed this behavior.
He was by the side of 50 patients in their final moments.
Oscar's unusual behavior eventually attracted the attention of the medical world. The cat's observations became the subject of a scientific paper written by Dr. David Dosa and published in 2007 in the journal The New England Journal of Medicine.
According to the records, Oscar was present with about 50 patients before their deaths. This situation also sparked discussions about how the cat could detect impending death.
Experts Focus on the Scent Hypothesis
The reason behind Oscar's behavior has not been definitively explained. One of the possibilities emphasized by experts is that biochemical changes occurring in people entering the death process alter body odor, and the cat can detect those changes.
Cats' highly developed sense of smell brings this possibility to the fore. However, it has not been scientifically proven whether Oscar actually perceives the approach of death through scent.
