Red Bull's 'more energy than coffee' lawsuit: $13 million settlement
Red Bull had offered a settlement that could reach up to $13 million in 2014 in a lawsuit over ads claiming the energy drink provides more energy, endurance, and focus than coffee or caffeine pills.
In the United States, consumers filed a lawsuit claiming that the statements in Red Bull's advertisements that the drink increases energy, endurance, and attention are not sufficiently supported by scientific studies.
The plaintiffs argued that Red Bull gives the impression of providing more benefits than coffee or a caffeine pill, and therefore they paid a higher price for the product.
Red Bull, however, maintained that the claims in its advertisements were true. The company agreed to pull the controversial ads.
Money or free products for consumers
Under the settlement proposed in 2014, consumers involved in the lawsuit were to receive two free Red Bull products or a payment of $10. The total settlement amount could reach up to $13 million.
The settlement also anticipated covering approximately $4.75 million in legal fees and expenses.
Court approval was required for the settlement to take effect.
