Inflatable play castles turned into a nightmare! 'Super bacteria' alarm: appeared suddenly in 48 children

At an outdoor event, 48 children and teens who played for hours in inflatable play areas were infected with antibiotic-resistant MRSA. Fifteen people with inflamed wounds on their bodies were taken to hospital.

In an outdoor event held in Ireland, children who played for hours in inflatable game castles fell ill from a rare, antibiotic-resistant MRSA bacterium. Among the 48 children and teens who attended, infections were detected in 15, who were taken to hospital.

In an outdoor event in eastern Ireland attended by about 120 people, a barbecue, candy stalls, and three different inflatable game castles were set up. It was determined that most of the children aged 5 to 16 spent long periods in the play areas.

Researchers examining the outbreak found that in almost all cases children spent at least four hours in the inflatable play areas, and that the small abrasions and scratches sustained during play may have facilitated bacterial entry into the body.

First Symptoms Appeared Within 24 Hours

After the event, infection symptoms began to appear quickly in 48 children and teens. Among the 34 children who fell ill, symptoms emerged within the first 48 hours, while in some cases symptoms started only 24 hours after the event.

Redness, fluid accumulation, inflamed pustules, and painful abscesses appeared in various parts of the children's legs, thighs, and bodies. Fever, nausea, and vomiting were also observed in some cases.

Investigations revealed that the outbreak was caused by MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), a strain resistant to commonly used antibiotics. The bacterium was also found to carry the PVL toxin, which can make skin and soft-tissue infections more severe.

15 Children Admitted to Hospital

While 33 children affected by the outbreak were treated by family doctors and in clinics, 15 children with more severe conditions were referred to hospitals. Four children were hospitalized for treatment.

Officials stated that none of the cases required intensive care and that there were no deaths due to the outbreak.

Risk of Wet Air and Close Contact Increased

Researchers determined that the weather on the day of the event was warm and humid, with intermittent rain. Wet skin, crowded surroundings, and the intense physical contact between children during play were considered factors that facilitate the spread of the bacteria.

Experts also pointed out that small abrasions on the skin could provide a suitable entry point for the bacteria to enter the body.

The results of the case study were published in the Irish medical journal Eurosurveillance. The incident entered the record as one of the largest community‑acquired MRSA outbreaks reported in the country.
