Following the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, a new development that could affect energy markets was announced. Trump stated in a statement on Truth Social on October 9 that Russia would supply millions of tons of diesel fuel to the United States and global markets.

Trump described the meeting as successful, noting that the agreement specifically aimed to curb rising fuel prices.

Russia's 4.8 Million Ton Diesel Shipment

According to the schedule announced by Trump, Russia will immediately offer more than 300,000 tons of diesel fuel to the market in the first phase. An additional shipment of 500,000 tons is planned for November, followed by another 1 million tons of fuel.

In addition, depending on conditions at Russia's refineries, an additional supply of 3 million tons is expected to be delivered in the near future. If all announced quantities are delivered, total shipments would exceed 4.8 million tons.

U.S. Eases Sanctions on Russian Diesel

Following the agreement, the U.S. administration announced a temporary exemption for restrictions on the sale, delivery, and import of Russian diesel fuel. The general license issued by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) under the U.S. Treasury Department allows the relevant transactions until April 7, 2027.

The decision comes amid ongoing sanctions on Russia's energy sector. The temporary exemption aims to facilitate the placement of Russian diesel on international markets.

Fuel Prices and the U.S. Economy Under the Lens

Trump argued that an increase in diesel supply could pull prices down in the U.S. and global markets. The president emphasized that lower fuel costs are a priority, especially for farmers, livestock producers, and those working in the transportation sector.

According to Reuters' October 9 report, the rise in diesel prices in the U.S. is one of the key economic items on the administration's agenda ahead of the midterm elections on November 3. Diesel is a core cost component in many sectors, from agricultural production to truck transportation.

Energy Cooperation with Russia Back on the Agenda

Kirill Dmitriev, Russia's special representative responsible for international economic cooperation, also made a statement on the energy relations between the two countries. Dmitriev said that the energy and economic cooperation between Russia and the United States would continue.

On the other hand, it is still unclear whether the shipments will be completed according to the announced schedule and to what extent the temporary sanctions exemption will affect market prices. The development has brought the energy relations between Washington and Moscow back to the top of the agenda.
