A new era in medicine: Pig kidney saves patient from dialysis for 271 days

A 66‑year‑old patient who received a genetically modified pig kidney has lived without dialysis for 271 days until a human kidney was found. The case is seen as a significant development indicating that animal organs could serve as a "bridge" for human transplantation.

The 66‑year‑old patient with type 2 diabetes‑related kidney failure received hemodialysis treatment for two years before the transplant. While a five‑year wait for a cadaveric kidney transplant was expected, the patient received a genetically modified pig kidney in January 2025.

To improve compatibility with the human body, 69 genomic edits were made to the pig kidney. The organ began functioning immediately after transplantation and provided kidney function to the patient for 271 days without the need for dialysis.

Subsequently, a human kidney was transplanted.

About nine months later, when the pig kidney’s function began to decline, the organ was removed. During this period, no antibody development that could prevent acceptance of the human kidney or signs of zoonotic infection were observed in the patient.

Doctors then found a suitable cadaveric kidney for the patient, and the human kidney was successfully transplanted. The patient maintained stable kidney function after the transplant.

Researchers point out that this is a single patient case and that the results reflect intensive specialist care as well as careful patient selection. Nevertheless, the case raises hope that genetically modified animal organs could serve as a future “bridge therapy” to bridge the waiting period for organ transplantation without dialysis.
