U.S. President Donald Trump met with leaders of Gulf and regional countries in New York for the United Nations General Assembly on September 22. Trump Praises Erdoğan

During the meeting, Trump spoke about Erdoğan and emphasized the close relationship between the two leaders. The U.S. President described Erdoğan as a 'very good friend' and said the Turkish President is a strong and determined leader. Trump’s remarks brought the personal closeness between the leaders back into the spotlight.

Trump used another striking remark about Erdoğan. The U.S. President said that the Turkish President is not an easy opponent, calling Erdoğan a 'tough nut.' These words became one of the most striking parts of Trump’s assessment of Erdoğan during the meeting.

Erdoğan Calls Attention to U.S.-Turkey Relations

Erdoğan said that, within the context of the meetings in New York, relations between Turkey and the United States should gain new momentum. The President announced that they are ready to expand cooperation in defense, as well as in nuclear energy, LNG, civil aviation, and high‑technology sectors.

The close relationship between Trump and Erdoğan also came to the fore during the NATO summit held in Ankara in July. Trump described Erdoğan as a strong and respected leader, while drawing attention to Turkey's military capacity. The U.S. President also said that there was a 'special' bond for the relations between the two countries.

Defense Agenda on the Washington-Ankara Line

In defense relations between the U.S. and Turkey, the F‑35 program and CAATSA sanctions are also among the prominent topics. Trump announced in July that sanctions against Turkey would be lifted and that F‑35 sales would also be considered. However, in a review sent by the U.S. Department of State to Congress, it was noted that legal conditions exist for Turkey's return to the F‑35 program.

Erdoğan's UN Messages

On September 22, Erdoğan reiterated the call for a reform of the United Nations Security Council during his speech at the UN General Assembly. The president also argued that the war in Gaza should end and that the State of Palestine should be recognized by more countries.
