Sexual Assault Shock on United Airlines Flight: Passenger Has Been Waiting for a Response for 5 Weeks
The woman who said she was sexually assaulted by the male passenger next to her on the Pittsburgh-Chicago flight in the U.S. said she has not received a response from authorities even after 5 weeks since the incident.

A claim of sexual assault alleged to have occurred on a United Airlines flight operating the Pittsburgh‑Chicago route in the United States has come to light. Leah Melley, who flew on September 22 for a business trip, alleged that the male passenger next to her touched her inappropriately and engaged in sexual behavior during the flight. Despite roughly five weeks having passed since the incident, Melley is awaiting a statement from federal authorities about the outcome of the investigation.
She insisted it happened in the 30th minute of the flight.
Speaking to WPXI, Melley said the incident occurred about 30 minutes after the flight began. The woman, who said she was seated by the window, stated that she had initially engaged in a casual conversation with the passenger next to her.
Later, Melley said she put on her headphones, turned toward the window, and did not want to communicate. She claimed that the passenger next to her repeatedly lifted the armrest between them. After a while, she alleged that the passenger, who was using a blanket, began to bother her by touching her arm and leg.
Melley alleged that the man covered his field of vision with a blanket, then touched her inner thigh and exposed his genitals, engaging in inappropriate conduct.

She said she did not allow him to get up from his seat.
Melley, who said he was frozen in place during the incident, claimed that when he said he wanted to get up from the seat, the person next to him shook his head in a negative response.
Melley then woke another nearby passenger to ask for help. He moved to the rear of the aircraft and told the cabin crew what had happened. As a result, he was moved to another seat and taken away from the passenger next to him.
The woman, after describing what she had experienced, noted that she was thinking of her family and daughters, drawing attention to the fact that the incident could happen to other women as well.

Statement from United Airlines
United Airlines, in a statement about the incident, said it was taking the passenger's complaint seriously. The company announced that after Melley informed the cabin crew, he was moved to another seat and was apologized to.
The statement also noted that the necessary steps were taken to have law enforcement meet the aircraft upon its landing in Chicago. The company announced that the other passenger connected to the incident was barred from United Airlines flights until his own investigation was completed.
Has been awaiting the outcome of the investigation for five weeks
Despite nearly five weeks passing since the incident, Melley says he has not received sufficient information from authorities and wants to know whether the person responsible has been detained and whether charges will be brought against them
The woman is demanding a clear answer from federal officials about which stage the investigation is at
In its statement, the FBI's Chicago office said it could not comment on details of investigations being conducted or likely to be conducted due to Department of Justice policies; thus, no official confirmation was made whether any investigation related to the incident is ongoing
Sexual Assault Reports on Planes in the Spotlight
Claims of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct toward passengers on planes are resurfacing in the U.S. recently. According to a February 2026 CBS News investigation, the FBI investigated more than 170 cases in 2024 involving passengers' sexual assault allegations against other passengers on aircraft. That number was recorded at about 130 in 2023
While it is assessed that a significant portion of incidents on aircraft went unreported, the debate centers on airlines and authorities needing to take more comprehensive steps to track such cases.
Leah Melley also expects that, in addition to the internal measures taken by United Airlines, the legal process concerning the incident will be clarified.
