Climate alarm in New Zealand: Thousands of glaciers are melting

The 2026 climate report released in New Zealand revealed that, in addition to temperature records, there has been serious loss in the volume of about 3,000 glaciers.

A comprehensive report exposing the impacts of climate change on the country was published in New Zealand."Our Atmosphere and Climate 2026"In the report, it was stated that record-high greenhouse gas levels have increased heat waves, extreme weather events, and glacier melt.

Temperature rose by 1.36 degrees.

According to the report, New Zealand's annual average temperature has risen 1.36 degrees since records began in 1909. It was also reported that 7 of the 10 hottest years on record have occurred in the last decade.

Experts warned that rising temperatures could lead to more frequent and intense heat waves in the coming period.

The Volume of Glaciers Has Nearly Halved

One of the most striking effects of climate change was observed in New Zealand's glaciers. It was noted that the country has about 3,000 glaciers, and that the total glacier volume was 56 cubic kilometres in 1997, falling to 30 cubic kilometres in 2023.

These data show that over roughly 26 years, glacier volume has nearly halved.

The Oceans Are Also Warming

The report noted that climate change is amplifying its effects not only on land and glaciers but also in the seas. Rising temperatures were said to be causing ocean warming, sea‑level rise, shifts in precipitation patterns, and an intensification of extreme weather events.

The report warned that climate change could have broader impacts on New Zealand's environment, native species, and communities in the coming years.
