Salmonella alarm in eggs! 306 people fell ill: recall decision in 8 countries

The Belgian Federal Food Chain Safety Agency (FAVV) has launched a comprehensive investigation into eggs suspected of being contaminated with salmonella. According to the official Belgian agency's report, investigations found that the eggs came from a producer in the Geel region of Belgium.

While the poultry at the production facility were quarantined, an investigation was launched to determine the source of the salmonella suspicion.

Eggs Being Recalled in 8 Countries

FAVV warned citizens not to consume the eggs in question and to return the product to the supermarkets where they were purchased.

FAVV spokesperson Helene Bonte announced that the eggs suspected of being contaminated with salmonella were recalled in a total of eight European countries, including Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Italy, and Portugal.

Officials emphasized that products covered by the recall must not be consumed under any circumstances.

What Symptoms Does Salmonella Cause?

The most frequently observed symptoms of Salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

In a large portion of cases, symptoms may subside within a few days. However, for young children and those with weakened immune systems, the infection can result in more severe consequences.

An Egg-Linked Outbreak Had Also Occurred in Belgium Earlier.

In Belgium, salmonella infections seen in roughly 70 people in March 2025 were determined to be linked to egg consumption. Following a joint investigation by FAVV, the Flemish Health Authority, and Sciensano, suspect eggs were pulled from the market.

According to FAVV data, 149 people were infected in nine salmonella-related foodborne outbreaks in the country in 2024. Of those, 20 were hospitalized, and eggs and tiramisu were among the foods identified as having a strong connection to the cases.

Meanwhile, seven youths who had taken part in a summer camp held in the Liège region were also hospitalized on August 14 due to illnesses assessed as caused by salmonella.

What is the situation in Turkey?

Following the development in Belgium, the focus shifted to egg products in European countries, and it was stated that the recall decision was Belgium‑originated and related to the products in question.

In Turkey, however, there is no known recall or similar salmonella alert concerning the same products. It is important for citizens to check the packaging information and the best‑before dates when buying eggs and to avoid consuming suspicious products.
