In the United Kingdom, doctors warned against the skin damage that could result from prolonged direct use of laptops on the body. The warning came to light after a child studying at home developed a serious rash on his skin following hours of using his laptop on his stomach.

In the case examined by doctors at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, it was determined that the child placed his laptop directly on his stomach instead of a desk while studying, using the device in that manner for up to eight hours a day. It was also found that he used the laptop most of the time while it was charging.

Ash‑colored marks appeared on the skin.

In medical literature, it is called erythema ab igne and in popular usage"red skin syndrome"known as the disorder, it develops from prolonged exposure of the skin to low‑level heat.

The most prominent feature of the disease is the appearance of red, brown, or dark-colored marks in a net-like pattern on the skin. In later cases, irritation and peeling in the area can also be observed.

Initially suspected to be a liver disease

The unusual rash on the child's abdomen prompted doctors to consider various possibilities during the initial examination. Despite suspicion of a liver-related disease, blood tests and imaging revealed no issues.

The child was discharged from the hospital. However, about two weeks later, the rash on the skin had noticeably worsened, leading to a return to the hospital.

This time the redness had spread to a larger portion of the abdomen, with irritation and peeling occurring in some areas of the skin.

Why it emerged when doctors asked about daily habits

By doctors examining the child's daily habits in more detail, the source of the problem emerged.

It was determined that the child used the laptop directly on his abdomen for long periods and was exposed to the heat radiated by the device for hours. In particular, using the laptop while charging caused the heat generated by the device to remain in contact with the skin for extended periods.

Doctors advised the child not to use the laptop directly on his body and to keep his abdomen away from other prolonged heat sources.

In Some Cases, Marks Can Be Permanent

According to experts, in mild cases the skin can return to normal over time when the heat source is avoided. However, prolonged and repeated heat exposure can lead to more serious skin changes.

In some patients, the darkening of the skin persists for long periods and can occasionally become permanent. It is noted that repeated low-level heat exposure over many years can be associated with certain skin cancers.

However, the appearance of such serious outcomes is usually seen after years of exposure.

It Completely Disappeared After Months.

The encouraging aspect of the case was that the changes on the child's skin regressed over time.

In the examination conducted months later, the child's father informed doctors that the rash was gradually fading and had finally disappeared entirely.

The Heat Emitted by Laptops Is Back in the Spotlight

Erythema ab igne was previously seen mainly in people who had been exposed for long periods to heat sources such as stoves, fireplaces, electric heaters, and hot water bottles.

Today, prolonged contact between laptops and similar electronic devices and the body is causing the disease to resurface for a different reason.

Experts emphasize that when children develop bow‑shaped redness or unexplained skin rashes, prolonged heat exposure in daily life should also be questioned.

Therefore, it is recommended that laptops not be used for extended periods directly on the chest, abdomen, or legs, and that a gap be left between the device and the skin.
