In Iceland, a critical referendum on EU membership: People at the ballot box

In Iceland, voters went to the polls to decide whether to restart the European Union membership process. The voting, which began at 09:00 local time nationwide, will end at 22:00.

In the referendum, voters are asked,"Should EU membership negotiations be restarted?"The question is posed. The outcome of the vote could open the door to a new era in Iceland's relations with the European Union.

The Membership Process Began in 2009

Iceland formally applied for EU membership in 2009. The negotiations that began were suspended when an anti‑EU government came to power in 2013.

After years, the issue returned to the national agenda. Following the 2024 elections, the coalition government formed under the leadership of the Social Democratic Alliance chose to let the public decide the future of the membership negotiations.

If the referendum returns a "Yes" result, the restart of membership negotiations between Iceland and the EU is planned.

However, today's vote will not decide whether the country becomes a direct EU member. If negotiations restart and are completed later, another referendum will be required in Iceland to make the final decision on membership.

The Result Is Highly Anticipated.

Public opinion polls released before the referendum in Iceland indicate a very close contest among voters. According to the surveys, a 51.3% segment supports the restart of membership negotiations with the EU.

Thus, while a landslide result is expected from the referendum, Iceland's future relationship with the European Union will also be reshaped by the outcome.
