Baggage Queue Lengthened After Flight Crisis in Newark

After an FAA-related communication failure at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, this time baggage congestion occurred. Following hours of flight delays and hundreds of cancellations, passengers waited in long lines to collect their luggage.
Flights Stopped for Hours
The communication issue at the Federal Aviation Administration's air-traffic control center in Philadelphia disrupted operations at Newark, as well as at New York's JFK and LaGuardia airports. Arrivals at Newark were halted from about 09:40 to 17:20.
Hundreds of Flights Canceled
On Monday, more than 600 flights were canceled in Newark, while over 200 were canceled in Philadelphia. Many flights were delayed at JFK and LaGuardia as well. Across the country, more than 1,000 flights were canceled and over 6,000 were delayed.
New Congestion in Baggage Claim
With the resumption of flight operations, the airport experienced passenger and baggage congestion this time. After hours of disruptions, the queues formed by passengers wishing to collect their luggage in Newark stretched inside the terminal.
The Cause of the Fault Became Clear
According to FAA officials, a fault occurred in the main communication circuit at the Philadelphia TerminalRadar Approach Control facility. When the system attempted to switch to the backup link, it was discovered that a fiber‑optic cable had been severed during construction work in New Jersey.
Systems Are Back Online
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that after the telecommunications lines were repaired, operations had resumed at airports in the northeastern United States. However, officials said that fully clearing the backlog of flights and passengers could take time.

Officials advise passengers traveling via Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia to check their flight status with airlines before heading to the airport. The impact of Monday's disruptions is expected to persist for a while longer despite the resumption of operations.
