The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to individuals or organizations that provide the greatest contribution to humanity in the field of peace. For 2026, a total of 287 nominations reached the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Of these, 208 are individuals and 79 are organizations.

The names of all candidates are not disclosed to the public. The Nobel Committee keeps information on nominations and evaluations confidential for 50 years. Therefore, part of the names appearing in the press stems from the candidates' own announcements of their selections or from experts' assessments.

Trump's Name Back in the Spotlight

One of the most talked-about names before the award was U.S. President Donald Trump. While leaders of Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan announced that they had nominated Trump, these nominations cannot be officially confirmed.

Trump's request for the Nobel Peace Prize resurfaced after last year the award was given to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. Machado's praise of Trump after receiving the prize and her statement that she wanted to give the medal to the U.S. President also influenced the debates preceding the 2026 award.

Pope Leo and International Institutions Also Discussed

Among those whose names have surfaced in the public eye for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize are Pope Leo, the International Criminal Court (ICC), the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on Palestinian Territories under Occupation. Emergency Response Rooms and Save the Children, which provide humanitarian aid during the war in Sudan, are also being considered as potential candidates.

One of the unconventional names that experts have highlighted is the International Space Station (ISS). It is noted that the ISS, which is operated jointly by the United States, Russia and Europe, can be seen as a symbol of cooperation among different nations toward a common goal despite their conflicts.

All eyes are on October 9.

The recipient of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday, October 9, in Oslo. The award ceremony will take place on December 10 in Oslo, Norway's capital.

While the committee's choice among 287 candidates is eagerly awaited, it is specifically emphasized that the names circulating in the public before the award do not constitute an official shortlist.
