Will Tesla End Taxis?

Tesla's moves in the autonomous transportation arena have brought the debate about the future of taxi services back to the forefront. Journalist Cüneyt Özdemir, while evaluating Tesla's autonomous vehicle plans in a YouTube broadcast, drew attention to the fact that traditional taxi services could undergo a serious transformation if the system becomes widespread.

"No Driver, Car Works Itself"

At the core of the model discussed in Özdemir's broadcast is the idea that Tesla will transform from merely a car-selling company into a platform that provides transportation services.

Özdemir highlighted the scenario in which driverless cars, in the future, will not only transport their owners from one point to another but also operate as autonomous taxis during the hours they are not in use.

According to this model, after dropping its owner off at work in the morning, the vehicle could continue carrying passengers instead of waiting in a parking lot for hours. When the owner wants to return home, the car could come to pick them up again.

Özdemir described this scenario with the words, "This car picks you up in the morning, drops you at work. Then it doesn't stay parked. It goes, works. It drives a taxi."

Is Tesla Moving From Selling Cars to a Platform?

The view that Tesla's long‑term goal is not merely to produce cars also surfaced. It was argued that if the company turns its autonomous driving technology into a transportation network, individual car owners could also become part of that system.

Özdemir reminded that people use their cars for only a limited time during the day, with the vehicles parked in front of homes or workplaces for the rest of the time.

The driverless taxi model, on the other hand, has the potential to turn the car’s idle hours into a revenue‑generating transportation service.

No Steering Wheel or Pedals Either

The article also mentioned Tesla's Cybercab project. The vehicle, lacking a steering wheel and conventional gas‑brake pedals, was presented as one of the most striking elements of Tesla's fully autonomous transportation vision.

However, the widespread deployment of such vehicles is not solely dependent on technological developments. State- and federal-level safety rules, licensing procedures, and autonomous vehicle regulations will also determine how rapidly the system can expand.

Reference to the Taxi Debates in Turkey

Cüneyt Özdemir also assessed the issue through the long-running taxi, Uber, and TAG debates in Turkey.

Reminding that new transportation models in Turkey frequently confront the taxi sector, Özdemir said that the emergence of a fully driverless system could bring about an even greater transformation.

Özdemir described the possibility of autonomous taxis becoming widespread as a 'nightmare' from the perspective of Turkey's current taxi system, using the phrase 'Imagine no taxi driver.'

Automobile Ownership Could Also Change

The spread of driverless taxis could change not only taxi drivers but also how people own cars.

If a vehicle spends most of the day parked instead of operating continuously in the transport network, it could also affect the total number of cars needed in cities in the future.

Özdemir also drew attention to this point, asking, “Should vehicles stop in front of houses and offices? Do we really need so many cars?”

Tesla’s autonomous transport plans are still unclear about the scale and speed of their adoption. However, the increasing presence of driverless vehicles in commercial passenger transport has already amplified the debate about the future of the driver‑centric taxi industry.
