However, the inscription “Abercrombie, ’51” on the painting’s corner drew his attention. That small detail suggested the possibility that the work might belong to Gertrude Abercrombie, a prominent figure in Chicago’s art scene.

An old photograph helped solve the mystery.

The collector then began researching the painting’s history. Finding an old photograph linked to “The Whole World Is a Mystery,” an exhibition of Abercrombie’s works held in Milwaukee, further strengthened his suspicions.

The artwork in the photograph matched the painting purchased by the collector and its original frame; consequently, assistance was sought from art history experts.

The expert examined it, and the truth emerged.

The review by art historian Susan Weininger, who specializes in Gertrude Abercrombie, confirmed that the piece belonged to the artist.

It was determined that the painting titled "Alderman Merriam's Shells" was created in 1951 and depicts the sea‑shell collection of Robert Merriam, who served on the Chicago City Council from 1947 to 1955.

About 75 Years Stayed in the Same Family

Research also uncovered striking details about the painting's provenance; it was determined that the work passed to John Reynolds, a physician in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1952.

It was claimed that the painting had been given to Reynolds in exchange for a medical procedure and then remained in the family for about 75 years. When the family's belongings were put up for sale, the painting got mixed in with other items.

The $30 Painting Is Now Up for Auction

The artwork, which had been away from public view for years, is returning to the art market after its discovery. The painting will be offered for sale at a public auction organized by Freeman's.

Experts suggest that the work could fetch between $150,000 and $250,000. When looking beyond the top estimate, the value of the $30 painting could have increased by thousands of times.
