Claim Shaking the USA's Famous University: Mass Protest on Campus
Cornell, one of the USA's prestigious universities, is rocked by sexual assault allegations. As more than a thousand people marched onto campus for 'Jane Doe', mounting reactions prompted New York Governor Kathy Hochul to act; the file was transferred to the special prosecutor, and an independent investigation was launched at the university.

Cornell University, one of the United States' leading universities, is at the center of growing protests over sexual assault allegations and the university administration's handling of the case. More than a thousand students, faculty, and activists gathered on the Ithaca campus in New York, supporting the former student referred to as Jane Doe in court documents, and called for an independent investigation and accountability of the university administration.
Mass Protest on Campus
The "Justice for Survivors" protest held on October 5 received support from numerous student organizations. Protesters gathered on campus argued that universities must take more transparent and stronger steps in sexual assault cases.
Among the protesters' demands were an independent review of Cornell's handling of sexual assault cases, strengthening of sexual assault prevention training for students, and trauma‑focused training for campus police.
During the demonstrations, some students also targeted Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff, calling for his resignation.

The incident extends into 2024.
It is alleged that the incident at the center of the debate occurred on the night of 19 October 2024.
The former Cornell student known as 'Jane Doe' accused certain members of the Chi Phi fraternity of sexual assault in the lawsuit she filed. Doe alleged that on that night she was encouraged to use alcohol and drugs, and after she became unable to defend herself she was subjected to sexual assault by several individuals.
The lawsuit listed seven individuals, the Chi Phi fraternity, Cornell University, and other parties as defendants.
However, it must be emphasized that those allegations have not yet been proven in criminal court. While some of the accused's attorneys deny the accusations, some parties argue that the sexual relationship was consensual.
The manner in which the initial investigation was conducted sparked debate.
It was reported that Jane Doe approached the Cornell campus police a few weeks after the incident and recounted what she had experienced. The subsequent records that emerged and the way the investigation was forwarded to the local prosecutor's office then sparked public debate.
The fact that no charges were brought in the initial criminal investigation, coupled with the incident resurfacing about two years later, raised questions about how local authorities were handling the file.
Cornell administration, however, announced that it had conducted a comprehensive disciplinary inquiry within its own ranks. According to the university, more than 50 interviews were held and over 30 witnesses were heard during the process. Following the investigation, some students were expelled from the school while others were suspended. The Chi Phi chapter within Cornell was also shut down.

New York Governor Hochul Steps In
After the incident sparked nationwide attention, New York Governor Kathy Hochul also took action.
Hochul appointed New York Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor in the case. Thus, the state attorney general’s office took over the criminal investigation related to the incident and began reexamining the file.
James’s office can assess the available evidence and, if deemed necessary, can bring the case before a grand jury.
Cornell's New Move After Protests
Another noteworthy step from Cornell's administration came on October 6.
The university announced that it would lead an independent study examining how former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates had handled Cornell's sexual assault cases.
It was noted that the review would not be limited to the Jane Doe case; it would also cover broader topics such as how the university investigates sexual‑assault complaints, the support provided to victims, disciplinary processes, campus‑police practices, and the oversight of fraternity organizations.
The incident alleged to have occurred at Cornell in 2024 thus became the subject of both a state‑level criminal investigation and the university's independent review two years later. Campus protests showed that students were not only demanding justice for Jane Doe but also pressuring the administration to change its policies on sexual assault.
