September Snow Claims a Life in Washington: Couple Trapped in the Mountains
In the United States, during a sudden snowstorm that struck the high elevations of Washington, a couple hiking in The Enchantments became stranded; the 45‑year‑old woman died.
A couple hiking in The Enchantments area of the Cascade Mountains in Washington state found themselves in a difficult situation due to heavy snowfall that intensified on September 13. In the area at roughly 7,000-8,000 feet (2,134-2,438 meters), the snow quickly reached 1-2 feet, or about 30-60 centimeters.
According to records of the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, the couple reported being trapped by sending a text to 911 at 17:26. The man said his wife could not move and that he could not lift her out of the area. It was noted that the spot where the couple was located was 8-10 miles from the nearest trails.
They were unprepared for the night.
In the second report at 17:49, it was reported that the couple’s clothing was completely soaked and the snow depth in the area had risen to 1-2 feet. It was recorded that Sybil Claborn was found under an emergency blanket and that the couple lacked the equipment needed to spend the night in the mountains.
Helicopters Could Not Overcome the Weather Barrier
Due to bad weather, rescue teams struggled to reach the area by air. A military helicopter was dispatched to the region around 20:00 on Saturday evening but had to return because of the weather conditions. A second attempt at about 23:50 also ended in failure for the same reason.
Rescue team arrived at night.
Two rescuers from the Chelan County Mountain Rescue team arrived on foot at around 03:30. Upon reaching the area, they determined that 45‑year‑old Sybil Claborn had died. Her husband was suffering from severe hypothermia. The rescue personnel attempted to stabilize his condition by heating him inside a tent.
His spouse was taken to the hospital.
In the morning hours, following the improvement in weather conditions, an army helicopter reached the area and airlifted Claborn’s wife and two rescue volunteers to Leavenworth Fish Hatchery. From there, the man who was taken to Cascade Medical Center in Leavenworth by ambulance was placed under treatment.
Investigation into the Cause of Death
Officials identified the 45‑year‑old woman from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma who died as Sybil Claborn. The Chelan County Coroner’s Office said it is continuing its investigation into the cause and manner of Claborn’s death.
In Seattle, the situation was different.
On the same day, downtown Seattle experienced a different weather pattern than the conditions in the high elevations. The National Weather Service's Seattle/Tacoma forecast called for rain in the city center, while temperatures were expected to be around the 60s Fahrenheit. Airport data from Seattle‑Tacoma recorded the highest temperature on September 13 at 60 °F.
Winter Surprise in September
National Weather Service data pointed to a chance of rain and snow in the high elevations of the Cascade Mountains on September 13, with snow levels in some areas expected to be around 7,000‑8,000 feet.
